Author’s Studio
Gundreda Road, Lewes, East Sussex, Planning Permission Granted
Architecture, Master planning, Landscaping & Interior Design
Completed Spring 2024.
Situated in an elevated position overlooking the River Ouse, and with far reaching views to Ashdown Forest to the North, the client – a successful novelist - required a studio space for writing away from the bustle of family life.
On the South Eastern Elevation of the property sat an uninspiring UPVC constructed conservatory, freezing in winter and boiling in summer, the structure was unusable.
We proposed an architectural space, encompassing varying zones to maximise the views whilst maintaining a sense of calm. It was decided that the structure should be a SIPS design & build and to achieve:
Calm singular space to allow for concentration and meditation
Ceiling, task and ambient lighting very important
Protruding window seat
Exterior & interior doors to studio space
A space to separate work and family life
We agreed a modern structure that worked with the existing architectural scheme, but not a slave to old traditions and aesthetics. Reafe Studios received planning permission within the Southdown's National Park.
Picking up on the black timber used on the existing architecture, we decided to clad the new outer structure in a charred single brushed Yakisgi Gendai timber, we then used other bold materials (Zinc & Corten Steel) for the: Roof, Windows, Window reveals.
The interior is clad in a singular bespoke matched solid & oak veneered panels, floating above the polished concrete floor. With a soundproof connecting portal to the existing building also made from solid and veneered oak. With the addition of bespoke architectural elements all manufactured within Sussex.
The work involved Concept Development, Master Planning, Landscaping, Architectural Interventions and Interior Architecture.
