Beauty Society
Interiors & Architecture, Signage & Graphics, Retail Design
Completed Spring 2019.
The aim of The Beauty Society was to reinvent the traditional department-store beauty counter. The John Lewis & Partners brief was to create a concept that formed a natural centre for play and exploration within a feminine and approachable environment, while simultaneously creating a sense of immersion and staying ahead of the curve. Inspired by the gentle, undulating form of an Alvar Aalto vase, we framed the area with a curtain to add softness to the rigidity of the architectural divide and ‘wrap’ the customer within a playful space. The curtain also marked the customers’ journey from the busy beauty floor to the serenity of The Beauty Society. Large openings in the outer structure not only made welcome entry points, but also controlled the views and offered an intriguing peek inside. This project pushed the boundaries of what could be achieved with a limited budget and timescale, and we delivered a final concept in three prototype stores within four months.
