REAFE STUDIO have just completed the detail design of a complex architectural intervention in Lewes. Situated in an elevated position overlooking the River Ouse, and with far reaching views to Ashdown Forest to the North, the client required a solution to the existing ground and first floor bay windows.
On the Eastern Elevation off the property, two rooms had poorly constructed UPVC windows and a brick elevation. The size and design obscured the views and did not allow free movement on the ground floor.
We proposed a single blackened timber clad reveal, encompassing the upper and lower elevations to maximise the views whilst maintaining a sense of modernity. Set within the reveal we designed bespoke steel framed upper windows and a matching slimline sliding doors to the ground floor.
With the plot falling away quickly It was decided that new foundations were required. The structural steel frame could be tied back to the new cut opening. This would give us a stable structure to over clad with softwood, insulation and the decorative outer hardwood frame.
